David Lynch's Hair And Its Fine Art Equivalent was the unanimous Loves vote victor for Paris-based stylist Grace Atkinson
Fine art and various permutations of a bouffant hairstyle are not perhaps natural bedfellows. Indeed, if put in a situation where the two were being compared, the sensible course would surely be to smile kindly and back away slowly; yet, when the hair belongs to filmmaker David Lynch, whose cinematic dial is set very firmly to “mystify”, it somehow makes sense. And it has clearly captured the imagination of the Loves stream, where David Lynch's Hair And Its Fine Art Equivalent was the unanimous victor for Paris-based stylist Grace Atkinson.
Created by Jimmy Chen of HTMLGiant, the grid places Lynchian hairstyles, in varying degrees of upheaval and flux, next to iconic and somehow entirely apt works of art. In repose, his hair is Monet’s Water Lilies, a deconstructed slick back is reflected by the sky of Turner’s Snowstorm, a cacophony of scrambled waves is married to Starry Night by Van Gogh, Cy Twombly’s scribbled graffiti illustrates a particularly windswept affair, and a deluge of concrete grey is The Great Wave by Katsushika Hokusai. And while it is entirely off kilter and somewhat nonsensical, it is the most apposite tribute to this, the most unconventional of visionaries.
To celebrate the welcome addition of intelligent whimsy onto AnOther Loves, here we talk to Atkinson about her favourite Lynch moments and how she would like to be immortalized in modern art.
