From Lady Gaga in Valentino to Timothèe Chalamet in a Louis Vuitton bib, we round up the best red carpet ensembles from this year’s Golden Globes
Awards season officially kicked off last night with the annual Golden Globes ceremony. Naturally, all eyes and media outlets were on the red carpet and the celebrities arriving in their finery. As many pairs of strappy stiletto-clad feet (reportedly doused in CBD oil) made their way down the 900ft crimson shagpile, we also keenly watched the arrivals. There were, of course, the misses: unforgiving boning made for an uncomfortable evening; wrists and necks that took the idiom ‘dripping in diamonds’ into gushing new territories; while full Kat Slater leopard print and a ‘folded origami napkin you might find at a wedding reception held at a conference centre in Reading’ moment made for less than flattering get-ups for two here unnamed actresses. But, of course, there were the hits, too. Mostly this came in the form of Valentino, but, unlike Best Actress winner Olivia Colman, we don’t deal in favouritism. So, without further ado, here is our selection of the best.
Lady Gaga
Nobody could quite put their finger on what colour Lady Gaga’s couture Valentino gown was. Its designer, Pierpaolo Piccioli, later cleared up any confusion via his Instagram stories: “It is not just blue, its [sic] not turquoise. It’s not lapis. It’s actually periwinkle!” he wrote, paying homage to Miranda Priestly’s famous scathing soliloquy in The Devil Wears Prada. Gaga also tinted her platinum hair to match. Even though she lost out on the Best Actress in a Drama to Glenn Close, she certainly won the red carpet. Completely brown cow stunning.
Lupita Nyong’o
Lupita Nyong’o was left battling for the affections of her Black Panther co-stars Michael B. Jordan and Danai Gurira last night. In fact, passions were running so high that she ended up snogging them both in a lift (see here for evidence), such was the allure of her blue, beaded Calvin Klein ensemble. Her beauty look was also on point, including electric blue eyelashes and sculptural hair. We wouldn’t expect anything less.
Timothée Chalamet
In a scenario previously restrained to Call Me By Your Name fan fiction/our heads, Timothée Chalamet chose a sparkling harness to walk the Golden Globes red carpet. On this occasion, he also wore clothes, which came care of Louis Vuitton menswear and newly installed artistic director Virgil Abloh. Later in the evening, the Parisian house would clarify said harness was not a harness at all, rather an “embroidered bib” – nonetheless, the ensemble was enough to incite scenes of mass hysteria on social media.
Jamie Lee Curtis
Sarah Burton has spent a large proportion of her career dressing royalty, including Kate Middleton, Duchess of Cambridge, on her wedding day in 2011. But Jamie Lee Curtis is the latest lady of royal stature to enjoy a custom Alexander McQueen get-up. Her subtle ‘fortnight in the Bahamas’ spray tan – with nude court shoe perfectly matching her sunkissed skin tone – and silver coiffure was offset to striking effect by this McQueen gown in suffragette white. All we’ll say is: Halloween H2WHOA.
Indya Moore
Nicolas Ghesquière rarely – if ever – misses the mark. Such was the case when Indya Moore, nominated for their role in Pose, chose to make their first ever awards carpet moment in a Louis Vuitton S/S19 mini dress, constructed in silver mesh. The sleeves were not fucking about, and neither were they.
Fiji Water Girl
Our concerns regarding the impact of single-use plastic were momentarily put on the proverbial ice as a new bottle-wielding temptress appeared in the form of “Fiji Water Girl”. Anyone who can photobomb several A-listers while simultaneously serving Fiji water and looks gets the seal of approval, to be quite honest. And really, are we all not just Fiji water girls serving on the red carpet of life?
