Next up in our series of collectors, we speak to Stephen Jones about his collection of Scandinavian Glass
Stephen Jones is London’s King of Hats. He has crafted headwear for everyone from Boy George and Vivienne Westwood to Marc Jacobs and the Princess of Wales, with a portfolio that spans forty years. However, while he is not perfecting the art of millinery, he collects Scandinavian glass. Scandanavia became a hub for glass production during the twentieth century, and rose to prominence during the 1950s and 70s. It has since become a niche collector’s market, recognised by its clean, modern lines and retro, streamline finish. Here, we speak to Jones about his collection.
When did you start collecting Scandinavian glass?
During my first trip to Finland in 1985, when I worked on a fashion show there with Vivienne Westwood.
Why did you start collecting these pieces?
Because I thought it was absolutely exquisite design and I still do. It is very inspirational for me.
Do you have a favourite piece?
Of course there is the elegance and simplicity of Sven Palmquist but what I do love is the simple everyday glassware, which was designed by Tapio Wirkkala for Iittala. My favourite pattern within that is Mesi Nectar. I also love Ice Bowl Humppila galss by Pertti Santalahti, which is featured in this photograph.
Where do you find it?
I bought many pieces in Finland, but some have been gifts and of course there is always eBay. Actually wherever I travel I look for it – I manage to find pieces in the weirdest places around the world like Texas or Seoul.
Where do you keep it the collection?
On a Welsh dresser, which belonged to my great-grandmother.
