The actress, who celebrates her birthday today, won Best Supporting Actress for her role in Naoh Baumbach’s divorce-drama

Last night’s Academy Awards saw Laura Dern – who appears on the cover of AnOther Magazine S/S20, photographed by Willy Vanderperre – take home the award for Best Supporting Actress for her role as ruthless lawyer Nora Fanshaw in Noah Baumbach’s divorce-drama Marriage Story. “I think she’s the first character I’ve played who doesn’t come from deep insecurity,” Dern told AnOther’s Hannah Lack of the character. “She’s in it to win, no matter the cost. She’s absolutely in control and will never lose her cool. I mean, my God, what a boss.”

Wearing a blush pink crepe gown with tassel embroidery by Giorgio Armani Privé, she thanked her parents Bruce Dern and Diane Ladd – who were themselves both actors, and have adjoining stars with their daughter on Hollywood’s Walk of Fame – in a touching speech. “Some say never meet your heroes, but I say if you’re really blessed, you get them as your parents,” she said, as an emotional Ladd watched on from the audience. “I share this with my acting heroes, my legends, Diane Ladd and Bruce Dern. You got game, I love you.” Dern celebrates her 53rd birthday today: “This is the best birthday present ever,” she said.

In the other acting awards, Renée Zellweger was awarded Best Actress for her performance in the Judy Garland biopic Judyformer Another Man cover star Joaquin Phoenix took home Best Actor for Joker; and Brad Pitt won Best Supporting Actor for his role in Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in HollywoodIt was South Korean director Bong Joon-ho’s Parasite, though, which was the evening’s biggest winner, taking home four awards. Among them were Best Director and Best Picture – the latter made Parasite the first non-English language film to win the top prize. “I feel like I’ll wake up to find it’s all a dream. It all feels very surreal,” Bong said. (Read our interview with Parasite screenwriter Han Jin Won here.)
