From Harley Weir’s idiosyncratic take on Courreges Spring/Summer 2020 to Gucci’s stroll through a fictional Parisian past, catch up on recent fashion campaigns here
Prada
Willy Vanderperre shoots the campaign for Prada’s Autumn/Winter 2019 collection, which was entitled Anatomy of Romance. The campaign, as Mrs Prada did with the collection, takes notions of romance and twists them: the set sees wildflowers growing in a sparse concrete building, as models like Freja Beha Erichsen, Gigi Hadid, Anok Yai and Nathan Westling inhabit the vast space. An accompanying film, also shot by Vanderperre and styled by Olivier Rizzo, documents the group seemingly from 360 degrees, producing what Prada compares to “a video game”.
Dior
Maria Grazia Chiuri looked to post-war Britain and its subcultures for Dior’s Autumn/Winter 2019 collection, which was rooted in both elegance and rebellion. The designer came across photographs Teddy Girls of the 1950s, with their Edwardian, dandy-inspired suiting – a counterpart as they were to the Teddy Boys of the same era. Selena Forrest and Ruth Bell feature in the campaign, which is complete with kohl-lined eyes and elegant plaid jackets.
Miu Miu
An ensemble cast of models – Hailey Bieber, Adut Akech, Jean Campbell and more – star in Miu Miu’s Autumn/Winter 2019 campaign under the creative direction of stylist and frequent Miu Miu collaborator Katie Grand. Shot by Eddie Wrey, shearling coats and matelasse handbags are backdropped by mother nature; it’s all blue skies, thick forests and misty creeks at Paws Up ranch.
Vivienne Westwood
This season, the Vivienne Westwood and Andreas Kronthaler for Vivienne Westwood campaigns were shot at one of London’s architectural gems: the Barbican. Photographed by Juergen Teller, the campaigns see models Jordan Barrett, Duckie Thot, Shin Hyeonyi, Chloe Pearson and Nicolas Duee pose alongside the designers themselves, who share a very personal connection to the Brutalist estate: “We love the Barbican, we go there on a regular basis over all these years, mostly to listen to concerts, home of the LSO,” they say. “It’s a place which always surprises you – the building is exciting, there’s always something new to discover.”
Courreges
Courreges’ latest campaign has been described by the storied French house as a “pre-campaign without models”, shot in London by Harley Weir. The image-maker wears Courreges’ Spring/Summer 2020 collection in and around her London home: the photographs are playful and striking, as Weir climbs through windows or take a selfie with her iPhone in louche tailoring, bright gingham and the brand’s signature leather boots.
Salvatore Ferragamo
For Salvatore Ferragamo’s Autumn/Winter 2019 campaign, British photographer Harley Weir composed a number of cataclysmic colour palettes out of the brand’s hot- and cold-coloured leather goods, suits and trenches. Shot in the hidden nooks and crannies of Milan – think rustic courtyards, entryways and doorways – creative director Paul Andrews aimed to showcase what he describes as the “special secret sites” of the urban Italian metropolis.
Gucci
Glen Luchford shoots Gucci’s Autumn/Winter 2019 campaign, a nod to storytelling, fashion and newspapers of decades past. Campaign images are pictured being pulled from newspaper kiosk stands, while other shots see garments being designed and fixed in ateliers, backstage at ‘shows’ or worn on the streets of Paris. A film accompanies the campaign images and follows a fictional Parisian atelier as a collection is shown and put together, in the decadent, eccentric style that we’ve come to expect from Alessandro Michele’s Gucci.
Loewe
Japanese photographer Fumiko Imano has a somewhat irreverent take on luxury. Loewe’s latest limited-edition ‘Publication’ book sees Chinese model Fei Fei Sun cavorting around a central flower bouquet as if in a photo flip book. Think you’re seeing double? Imano peeks from behind a white curtain and re-adjusts flower pots alongside her digitally constructed doppelgänger, all in outfits styled by Benjamin Bruno (a frequent collaborator of creative director Jonathan Anderson). “Making these self-portraits somehow became a therapy,” Imano says.
Chopova Lowena
Equestrian vaulting? “It’s gymnastics on horses,” says designer Laura Lowena, one half of London-based label Chopova Lowena. This daring pastime is not only the subject of the brand’s Autumn/Winter 2019 campaign, but is also directly sewn into the visual language of the collection itself; Emma Chopova and Lowena looked towards the pageantry of the sport, opposing it with the traditional costume of Albania. With off-kilter imagery shot by Charlotte Wales and styled by AnOther’s senior fashion editor Agata Belcen, the campaign features the candid faces of Great Britain’s equestrian vaulting team as they perform on horseback wearing the vivacious collection.
Givenchy
Ariana Grande fronts Givenchy’s Autumn/Winter 2019 campaign, in a series of portraits shot by Craig McDean. Presented with the hashtag #Arivenchy, the singer wears pieces from the Winter of Eden runway collection (complete with her signature eyeliner flick and impossibly long ponytail) and holds the season’s statement bag, also called the Eden.
