Why Dame Vivienne Westwood Switched a Show for a Lookbook

For Spring/Summer 2020, the designer released a digital lookbook and short video

Last season, Vivienne Westwood set tongues wagging during her unconventional Autumn/Winter 2019 show, which saw models, actors, and activists (including longtime Westwood muse Sara Stockbridge, Rose McGowan, and the head of Greenpeace) storm the catwalk with microphones, singing the praises of sustainability. It was, for all intents and purposes, more climate change protest than runway.

This season, the brand has taken this message a step further by putting a middle finger up to London Fashion Week entirely, showcasing its Spring/Summer 2020 collection via a digital lookbook and a short video, in which Dame Westwood delivers a message about rotten financial systems, equal land distribution and choosing quality over quantity when it comes to consuming fashion.

Shot by Hugo Comte, the lookbook is set in an imaginary future – a premonition of what could be in store for the human race should we not take heed of her words. “We are using this as an opportunity to show our best clothes, the future is quality not quantity. Less is more sustainable,” she says.
