14 of the Best Fashion Campaigns from the New Season

From Matthieu Blazy’s first campaign as the creative director of Bottega Veneta to Chloë Sevigny and Dominic Fike for Calvin Klein; here are the best campaigns from the Autumn/Winter 2022 season

Bottega Veneta

Bottega Veneta was created by a collective of artisans. This is the history and this is how we approached the campaign: together, with many different ways of seeing,” says Matthieu Blazy of his first campaign as creative director of the Italian brand for Autumn/Winter 2022. The campaign sees an alchemy of viewpoints led by three photographers: Sander Muylaert, Solène Gun and Malick Bodian. Bottega Veneta’s sumptuous leathers play a pivotal role here, namely their intricate hand-woven ‘intrecciato’ leather treatments, evocative of a luxury that speaks to the house’s rich history.

Prada

Hunter Schafer was the surprise star of Prada Autumn/Winter 2022; the Euphoria star closed the lively Milan show in a white tank top and a glittering, partly sheer panelled skirt. The ensuing campaign, shot by David Sims, features Schafer in that white vest alongside models Loli Bahia, Sora Choi, Kendall Jenner, Liya Kebede, Amanda Murphy, Kai Newman and Lina Zhang. The images, slightly drained of colour, have a retro feel – and are paired with atmospheric still life shots of mundane objects; a pencil eraser, dice, basketball and notebook all appear.

Alexander McQueen

“This collection is inspired by that idea of community, and specifically by mycelium, by the reality of nature as a community that is far, far older than we are,” said Sarah Burton of her mushroom-inspired Alexander McQueen Autumn/Winter 2022 show, held earlier this year in a warehouse in New York City. The new mirage-like campaign, shot by Italian photographer Paolo Roversi, features many of the collection’s standout pieces; a vest mimicking the spots of fly agaric mushrooms with messy, tasselled embroidery, a blue suit spray painted with a mushroom spore print, and a fringed dress in red, orange, green and yellow that evokes the changing colours of the seasons.

Jil Sander

Jil Sander’s latest campaign brings back the long lost art of the fashion still life; under the creative direction of husband-and-wife duo Lucie and Luke Meier, the Italian label’s minimalist, sculptural pieces are indeed worthy of portraiture. Cylindrical bags, black leather boots, and shiny silver and gold flats hold their own in images by Chris Rodes, overlaid by the iconic, blocky Jil Sander logo.

Miu Miu

Miu Miu has a knack for tapping the most interesting women of the moment; their new campaign, shot by Tyrone Lebon and styled by Lotta Volkova, features Euphoria star Sydney Sweeney, writer and model Emily Ratajkowski, The Crown’s very own Princess Diana (Emma Corrin), and actor Demi Singleton (who plays a young Serena Williams in King Richard) in no make-up make-up looks, alongside models Maty Drazek, Amber Later and Jade Rabarivelo.

Proenza Schouler

Lazaro Hernandez and Jack McCollough’s Autumn/Winter 2022 Proenza Schouler show was decidedly buzzy; copies of an Ottessa Moshfegh short story were laid on guests’ seats, while a violin quintet played an original score by experimental musician of the moment Eartheater. The campaign, shot by Tim Elkaim, is far less noisy; Bella Hadid and Julia Nobis pose amongst silver birch trees and slick blue tarpaulin wearing the brand’s minimalist, luxurious wrap coats, suits and balaclavas.

Dior Mens

Kim JonesWinter 2022-23 collection for Dior Men’s was a remarkable ode to Christian Dior – both the fashion house, and the man behind it – and it’s an honour that extends to their latest campaign released earlier this week. Photographed by Rafael Pavarotti and backdropped by prints of historical Parisian landmarks hued in modern blues and dusty yellows, the images capture a love and reverence for French fashion that melds past and present to inform a sophisticated, innately romantic vision of menswear.

Calvin Klein

Back in April, Alasdair McLellan shot the most bizarre campaign in recent memory for the Calvin Klein and Palace collaboration. In it, a motley crew made up of former AnOther cover star Willem Dafoe, Joan Collins and the Pet Shop Boys were captured across London and New York alongside Adwoa Aboah, Lourdes Leon and British skateboarders Lucien Clarke and Charlie Birch. The new Calvin Klein campaign, released yesterday, sees McLellan turn his lens on another eclectic crop of talent old and new: there’s actors Chloë Sevigny, Susan Sarandon, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Dominic Fike, Lila Moss, skateboarder Efron Danzig and more.

Margaret Howell

The Autumn/Winter 2022 campaign from London-based brand Margaret Howell sees the collection, imbued with a quiet energy, worn by models on the streets of Southbank in London, captured by photographer Annemarieke van Drimmelen in moments of daily wear, fluttering in gentle breezes and in motion. “I like to shoot our campaign images in black and white,” says Margaret Howell. “This may be connected to social documentary photographs, which are always a source of inspiration for me when designing clothes. People’s expressions, their clothes in movement, a moment caught.”

Raey

Beloved for their elevated, luxury basics with an environmentally conscious practice, Raey launched their Autumn/Winter 2022 collection in a campaign with creative direction and photography by fashion iconoclast Suzanne Koller. The images capture a new take on the label’s signature tailoring, oversized denim and luxe knitwear.

Blumarine

Blumarine has been quietly prepared for the Y2K renaissance. In a new campaign photographed by darling of the internet generation Petra Collins, the Autumn/Winter 2022 collection is reimagined in a dreamlike, cinematic series of images that sees industry favourite Sasha Pivovarova in the starring role. In various doll-like poses on a car submerged in a pool, the campaign’s effect is a Lynchian dream of hot-pink innocence, with a subversive and sensual edge.

Balenciaga

Demna, through his thoughtful creative direction, has a gift for creating worlds. Directed by Barcelona-based artist Mau Morgo, and photographed by Daniel Roché, the campaign for Balenciaga’s Winter collection sees models in dystopian, simulated weatherscapes, following on from the collection’s presentation in a glass dome wherein models circled in a snowstorm. Embracing the era of celebrity, the campaign features Alexa Demie and previous AnOther cover star Kim Kardashian

Montblanc

Great menswear reveals itself in the details. The master craftsmen at Montblanc have long sustained a precision-oriented method of design, breaking codes with their advanced accessories for the modern man. The new campaign features former Another Man cover star Cillian Murphy on the move, his Montblanc accessories a reliable companion, as the French label bridges the gap between heritage style and tech-driven practicality.

Givenchy

The latest campaign from Givenchy sees a dreamlike series of still images and a film lensed by Nick Knight and conceived by creative director Matthew M Williams. Drenched in an ethereal light against glossy pinks and vintage floral wallpapers, the campaign has a bold, rebellious attitude. “The faces in this season’s campaign really represent what Givenchy means today,” says Williams. “It’s a uniquely eclectic group: each model is an icon in their own right.”

Dunhill

What feels more British than Dunhill? In a new campaign shot in retro home in Belgravia, London by Scott Gallagher, the campaign for Autumn/Winter 2022 features intimate portraits, juxtaposed beside an image of the model in setting, highlighting not only the individuality of each Dunhill wearer, but also the luxe yet irreverent spirit of the House – fit for the sophisticated, modern gentleman.

Matches Fashion
