As part of the relaunch of the men’s fashion magazine, Another Man hosted a screening of Derek Jarman’s experimental short films
Last night (May 9), Another Man hosted a screening of Derek Jarman’s Super 8 films at the Institute of Contemporary Arts (ICA) in London.
The screening included nine films in total: Ostia, which was directed by Julian Cole but stars a young and very handsome Derek Jarman; and then eight of Jarman’s experimental short films including Studio Bankside, Journey to Avebury, Tarot, Sulphur, Sloane Square, Duggie Fields at Home, My Very Beautiful Movie, and Garden of Luxor.
The films were followed by a Q&A with James Mackay, who produced many of Jarman’s films, hosted by NOWNESS’s creative director Bunny Kinney. The conversation delved into Jarman’s idiosyncratic approach to art and filmmaking, speaking to his unique talent as an auteur.
Guests included figures from fashion and the arts, including Princess Julia, Lux Gillespie, Simon Fisher Turner, Amanda Wilkinson, Annie Symons, Howard Sooley, David Lewis, designers Jawara Alleyne, Charles Jeffrey, Yang Li and Olly Shinder, artist Kingsley Ifill, photographers Gareth McConnell and Thurstan Redding, musicians Lucinda Chua and Thomas Cohen, and floral designer Flora Starkey.
This event coincided with the relaunch of Another Man, the latest issue of which came out last month and features a portrait of Jarman’s former home Prospect Cottage in Dungeness, Kent, photographed by Douglas Irvine. Prints from this story are currently on sale at the ICA, with proceeds going to the Prospect Cottage residencies.
