On March 25, Another Man and Leigh Bowery’s overlapping communities came together to view Leigh Bowery’s brilliant retrospective at Tate Modern, and share memories of the late legend

Yesterday evening, guests gathered at Tate Modern for a private view of the Leigh Bowery! exhibition, hosted by Another Man. “This show is as much a love letter to Leigh Bowery’s time, as much as it’s a love letter to his community of London that continues to thrive, and the creativity that’s brought to the city by many of you here,” said Fiontán Moran, the curator of the exhibition, at the event. “Being able to present a view of Leigh Bowery’s work, as well as his contemporaries, was very meaningful, and it was especially exciting that the latest Another Man issue amplified many of those voices. It did make me stress that it might be better than our own catalogue – but they’re both good.”

Tate Modern’s hit show, which opened last month, shines a torch on the radical, outrageous life of the Australian performance artist, offering an unprecedented view of his life and looks. Despite his passing two decades ago, the work Bowery left behind continues to nourish a community of creatives – among them Another Man’s own team, who have partnered with the exhibition and dedicated their latest issue to the memory of the club legend who touched so many. Guests gathered on the third floor of Tate Modern’s Natalie Bell building, mingling and drinking wine, before heading inside to explore the exhibition.

Guests included fashion designers and artists Stefano Pilati, Gareth Pugh, Jawara Alleyne, Pam Hogg, Priya Ahluwalia, Jebi Labembika; musicians and DJs Tom Rasmussen, Yasmina Dexter, Princess Julia; models Kiki Willems, Jonas Gloer, Alva Claire, Lux Gillespie; stylists Harry Lambert and Ola Ebiti; industry heavyweights Jess Hallett, Gary Card, Gary Gill, Lucy Bridge, Jo-Ann Furniss; photographers Gareth McConnell and Trinity Ellis; among Bowery’s once partner, the director and owner of the Estate of Leigh Bowery, Nicola Rainbird.

The new exhibition invites the public to fully immerse themselves in the world of Leigh Bowery, offering a rare chance to witness many of his iconic looks alongside his groundbreaking collaborations with artists like Charles Atlas, Nick Knight, John Maybury, Fergus Greer, Nicola Rainbird, and Lucian Freud. From his flamboyant rise in London’s 1980s nightlife scene to his later years as a performance artist and television provocateur, Bowery’s legacy is as bold and unapologetic as ever – and there’s an astonishing amount to take in.

Leigh Bowery! is on display at the Tate Modern until 31 August 2025. The limited edition Leigh Bowery Another Man cover is available exclusively from the Tate Modern gift shop.
