Opening April 12, Another Man are partnering with radical photographer Daisuke Yokota with an exhibition during Japan’s iconic photography festival’s associated program

Under the leadership of editor-in-chief Ellie Grace Cumming and art director Lina Kutsovskaya, Another Man has remained steadfast in its mission to champion photographers and artists who push the boundaries of image-making in an era oversaturated with visuals.

Among them is Daisuke Yokota, whose work – created in response to the original Comme des Garçons Eau de Parfum – was recently featured in the magazine’s Winter/Spring 2025 issue. The project was further expanded into a special 32-page zine, included inside a limited-edition boxed version of the issue. Now, Another Man is taking this collaboration even further, unveiling an exhibition with Yokota on the associated program at KYOTOGRAPHIE – Japan’s premier photography festival – set to open on April 12.

The work of Daisuke Yokota is an exploration of transformation, where the act of creation is as significant as the final image. Born in Saitama, Japan, in 1983, he graduated from the Nippon Photography Institute in 2003, making work inspired by the emergence of Provoke, the radical and influential Japanese avant-garde photography movement that emerged in the late 1960s, founded by photographers Takuma Nakahira and Yutaka Takanashi, critic Kōji Taki, and later joined by the legendary Daidō Moriyama (who has also photographed a cover for AnOther Magazine).

In his silvery, visceral works, Yokota deliberately disrupts traditional development methods, exposing film to light leaks, scorching negatives, or subjecting them to boiling water and acidic treatments. What remains is not the subject itself but an abstracted world of shadows, textures, and unpredictable distortions. The result is a fusion of chance and intention, where photography is an alchemy of destruction and reinvention.

The exhibition, Daisuke Yokota x Another Man, will feature as part of the associated programming of KYOTOGRAPHIE’s 13th edition. Since its founding in 2013, the festival has gained global recognition for its immersive approach to photography exhibitions. KYOTOGRAPHIE transforms Kyoto’s historic temples, traditional machiya townhouses, and modern spaces into unique galleries, creating a dialogue between contemporary photography and Japan’s rich cultural heritage.

Elsewhere on the schedule, 14 artists will hold exhibitions across 15 venues in Kyoto city – Adam Rouhana, Eamonn Doyle, Eric Poitevin, Graciela Iturbide, Hsing-Yu Liu, JR, Keijiro Kai, Laetitia Ky, Lee Shulman & Omar Victor Diop, Mao Ishikawa, Martin Parr, Pushpamala N, Tamaki Yoshida, and Hiromi Tsuchida and more – exploring this year’s central theme of ‘Humanity’.

Daisuke Yokota x Another Man is showing at The Lombard in Kyoto, Japan as part of the associated program at KYOTOGRAPHIE festival from 11 April – 25 May 2025. Tickets can be purchased here.
