Helmut Newton (1920 – 2004), one of the most influential photographers of all time.
Who? Helmut Newton (1920 – 2004), one of the most influential photographers of all time.
What? The German-Australian image-maker rose to the height of fame in 1970s with his provocative and erotically charged fashion photographs. Principally working for French Vogue, over time Newton’s imagery became a mainstay in numerous high fashion magazines and top publications. As his work still strongly resonates today, Helmut Newton, Polaroids published by Taschen presents a collection of the photographer’s test Polaroids allowing for a rare glimpse into the workings behind some of his greatest shoots over a period of decades.
Why? Once a crucial tool for photographers to test their shots before shooting on film, the rise of digital photography has made the Polaroid almost obsolete. Whilst Helmut Newton, Polaroids celebrates the thrill of the instant image and these one-of-a-kind prints it also provides a comprehensive insight into the sketchbook of one of the world’s most prolific photographers. Many of the iconic photographs that have already been published can be discovered here in the process of their creation.
Helmut Newton, Polaroids, £34.99 is published by Taschen and available at www.taschen.com from July.
