The image-maker is selling three rare photographs as high-quality, large-format prints at accessible prices
Despite releasing her seminal debut photo book No System some 25 years ago, the thirst for more from artist Vinca Petersen is still exceptionally high. “I get these endless emails from people asking for [rereleases of the book],” she told AnOther previously. Now, the photographer is answering these calls to make her prints more accessible with a sale of three prints, printed in batches of 100 and priced affordably. “Most of my works are limited to small editions, which make them inaccessible to some people who might want them in their homes,” she says, “so I am happy to introduce this more accessible series.”
Petersen has spent decades documenting counterculture movements, particularly the rave and techno scenes of the 1990s and early 2000s, creating visual diaries that distil her experience travelling across Europe with nomadic groups as a part of the free party movement, each time offering a glimpse into the lives of the micro-communities who organised parties, and the lives of the enormous gatherings of young people assembled around them. Having compiled her images into a photo album in the late 90s, friend and mentor Corinne Day suggested she publish it. Eventually, she did, with Steidl; Petersen then exploded into the cultural consciousness, and her works have remained in demand ever since.
“In some ways our younger selves seem like strangers. Who was that person? What were they thinking? I get lost in the memories,” Petersen told AnOther previously. “Taking pictures was definitely a way of remembering and capturing these adventures and keeping them.” Among those memories are three images that featured in her joyful monumental solo exhibition Raves and Riots, which documented the artist’s experiences from 1990-2004, having left home at the age of 17, moved into a London squat, and immersed herself in the party scene that spread across Europe. Pink Girl and Riot Cops, Anarchy Sky and Riot Cops are now available for purchase in numbered and signed high-quality museum-grade C-type prints.
