Who? Flamboyant artist Grayson Perry is featuring in an array of exhibitions the latter part of this year. Having designed a unique show at the British Museum, this week he presented his Curated Shelf at the Louis Vuitton store on Bond Street – a range of books selected as an insight into the artist’s inspirations and creative psyche.
What? Since winning the Turner Prize for his ceramic works in 2003, Perry has dabbled in a variety of artistic mediums, most notably fashioning an identity as an artwork in himself. This side to his oeuvre was explored in the recent edition of AnOther Magazine, which discussed his yearly participation in the Central St Martin’s print course syllabus, which sees students tasked with creating a dress for Perry’s transvestite alter-ego Claire. The three winning gowns, including the extraordinary overall victor – a silk dress covered by a long hooded cloak, lavishly embellished with a six-foot pearly penis on the rear – are on display in-store during Perry’s residency. They sit alongside an elaborate travelling trunk created by the artist in honour of his teddy bear and muse, Alan Measles.
"Grayson Perry is not simply one of the UK’s most notorious and picturesque artists, but also one of its most multifaceted"
Why? Grayson Perry is not simply one of the UK’s most notorious and picturesque artists, but also one of its most multifaceted. As demonstrated, his interests cover a range of mediums and have covered a number of unexpected collaborations, all of which have been thought provoking and demanded attention. Now, in the form of The Curated Shelf, visitors are enabled to take a look at the titles that have moulded the mind of this most unconventional of artists.
The Curated Shelf by Grayson Perry will be on display at the Louis Vuitton New Bond Street Maison until January. The Tomb of the Unknown Craftsman runs at the British Museum until February 19 2012.
