Last year, AnOther considered the role of cats in campaigns, but now it is dogs’ turn to take their place under the fashion spotlight. Yesterday’s Givenchy by Riccardo Tisci A/W12 Haute Couture show saw Joan Smalls accompanied by a bright-eyed Alsatian on a leash, whose shades of black, brown and tan perfectly matched the collection’s palette. This is not the first Givenchy dog moment, however: Riccardo Tisci's A/W11 menswear collection featured a variety of snarling Rottweiler prints.
Over the years a number of photographers have also turned to dogs as supporting acts in their stories. Many of Richard Avedon’s photographs showed glamorous women, notably Marilyn Monroe, accompanied by dogs – the ultimate (and animated) accessory. More recently, iconic fashion photographer and renowned dog-lover Bruce Weber – featured in our column The Pets – has looked to dogs for inspiration in his shoots. Golden Retrievers are his favoured breed and have starred in a number of his works, from his book Bear Pond, to his A/W09 campaign for Moncler. For her S/S10, Stella McCartney similarly looked to dogs to enhance her campaign, using a photograph of her childhood Dalmatian as a backdrop to a Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott-shot Natalia Vodianova.

Interestingly, our AnOther roadtrippers, travelling across Europe in collaboration with Canon, have spotted an impressive array of canine companions on their travels; from a shiny-coated Hungarian Vizsla bounding through a Parisian park, to a stubby, wrinkled French Bulldog and some petite and dainty Chihuahuas, all captured in their photo diary.
