James Goldstein, the elusive playboy and American multi-millionaire who attends over one hundred NBA games each season and is a regular at international fashion weeks, favouring designers Roberto Cavalli, John Galliano and Jean Paul Gaultier. What? This season, Goldstein has attended almost every show on the official London Fashion Week schedule and evening events, including AnOther's party at Annabel's on Saturday night. AnOther's senior fashion editor Sophia de Romarate has enjoyed watching him in action in Milan, Paris and New York for well over a decade, but this is the first time she has spotted him in London. "I love his signature look of of exotic skins and his trilby hat." Unlike other show attendees, Goldstein is never seen with a ticket in his hand.
Why? Aside from fashion, Goldstein's other passions include architecture and basketball, although he doesn't support one particular team. The son of a Milwaukee department store owner, Goldstein said he began watching NBA games as a 10-year-old. At the age of 15 he was hired to keep game statistics by the Milwaukee Hawks. "I have such a passion for the game. I think there's more athleticism displayed in basketball than in any other sport", he once said.
Very little is known about how Goldstein made his millions although many believe it to be in real estate. Goldstein's own house in Los Angeles is almost notorious as the man himself. Known as Sheats Goldstein Residence, the striking house featuring its a "skyspace" was designed by John Latner, a student of Frank Lloyd Wright and featured in The Big Lebowski and as a backdrop in a number of Helmut Newton photographs.
