Stephen Friedman Gallery, home of established artists such as David Shrigley and Catherine Opie, is taken over by Dazed & Confused and Converse as they present their pick of Britain’s young, unrepresented talent this week. LA’s Chinatown is transformed into a performer’s playground for Perform! Now!, Sylvie Guillem’s breathtaking Eonnagata with costumes by Alexander McQueen returns to the stage for just three days and MIA and Crystal Castles line up to play at a boisterous festival – one catch, you have to be under 18 to attend.
Wednesday July 28 – Eonnagata at Sadler’s Wells, London
With costumes by Alexander McQueen, and the creative union of Sylvie Guillem, Robert Lepage and Russell Maliphan, Eonnagata was an immediate success upon its unveiling last year. For those who didn’t manage to see it in 2009, Eonnagata will return to Sadler’s Wells for just three days from July 28 to 31.
Thursday July 29 – Opening of Converse/Dazed 2010 Emerging Artists Award at Stephen Friedman Gallery, London
Beginning in April this year, Converse and Dazed & Confused launched a major new art prize designed to offer an exciting platform for emerging artists, with a first prize of £6,000. A panel including Sadie Coles, Mark Titchner, Tom Morton and Tim Marlow decided on a shortlist of five young artists artists; Francesca Anfossi, Peter Ainsworth, Steve Bishop, Laura Buckley and Jess Flood Paddock. The overall winner is Peter Ainsworth. The shows runs until August 21.
Thursday July 29 – Perform! Now!, Chinatown, Los Angeles
This performance festival taking place inside and outside venues throughout the Chinatown district features more than 40 performances to challenge the often fixed positions of performer and spectator.
Friday July 30 – Underage Festival, London
With a line-up including Crystal Castles, MIA and Tinchy Stryder this weekend sees an event that will make us all wish we were younger. Underage kids in the UK are often excluded from music events and this is a great opportunity for young people to have a space of their own with a line up that rivals that of parent festival Field Day.
