Pioneering photographer David Luraschi took to the streets of Paris Fashion Week for AnOther, to offer his unique back view of the city
David Luraschi’s work is recognisable for his unique approach to street-style photography, in which he photographs his subjects from behind. “It’s purely instinctual, I don’t really think,” he explains. “Sometimes it’s character-driven, sometimes it’s colour or body language. I look for humour, some detachment or a contrast, like you would find in a Jacques Tati film.” His intimate silhouettes offer a refreshing break from the poised, often try-hard images of street-style fashion blogs.
“I like to see it as a grand ball,” he continues. “A get-together where all my characters dwell. I am inspired by Anthony Hernandez, who photographed a great series of people waiting for the bus in Los Angeles back in the 1970s. We also had a few August Sander photos hanging in our home growing up. His classical portraits of the working class had a great impact on me.”
The French-American photographer took to the streets of Paris Fashion Week for AnOther to photograph the rich tapestry of prints and characters that make up the city, from colourful locals and Grace Coddington dashing through the crowd to a candid shot of Rick Owens speaking to his mother.
