Who? Paula Rego, Maggi Hambling, Swoon and Humphrey Ocean.
What? An exhibition of new work by some 200 artists in response to the brutal rape, mutilation and murder of more than 400 women in the US border town of Ciudad Juárez and Chihuahua, Mexico. Each artist has painted one of the murdered women and for the first time this show brings all the artworks from this five-year project together.
Why? Commissioned by Tamsyn Challenger and in association with Amnesty International, this large-scale collaboration seeks to highlight the awful atrocities and act as a permanent statement against violence to women everywhere. Commemorating and remembering the dead through these individual artworks on canvas, visitors to the exhibition will also be invited to participate in action to bring justice to the region of Juárez.
Where? 400 Women runs until 28 November at Shoreditch Town Hall Basement, London.
