Who? Yvonne Rainer
What? The Yvonne Rainer Project
Why? A dancer, choreographer and filmmaker, the multi-talented San Franciscan has been an inspiration to many. She was confrontational, feminist, finding abstract ways to convey her messages through movement. The main bulk of her legacy is her seven feature films, which she concentrated on making after she quit choreography in 1975. During the Eighties, the Village Voice called her “The most influential American avant-garde filmmaker of the past dozen years, with an impact as evident in London or Berlin as in New York,” and here you have ample opportunities to see why. In addition, Rainer’s installation After Many a Summer Dies the Swan: Hybrid (2002) will be shown for the first time in Europe at the BFI Gallery.
Rainer's seven films will be screened at the BFI, London between 17 - 28 December. The Yvonne Rainer Project exhibition runs at the BFI Gallery until 23 January 2011.
