After months of planning and preparation, AnOther's Birthday Cakes are finally ready to be unveiled in Selfridges Wonder Room Concept Store Lab. The installation takes place late this evening and the spectacular creations will be on display to the public tomorrow until 22 February.
When invited to participate in the project, Riccardo Tisci of Givenchy responded with “dark decadence, sensuality, something that recalls pure pleasure.” Chef Simon Smith, feted for his intricate works made entirely from margarine was chosen to realise the three-tier erotic orgy, featuring masked humans and acts of beastiality.
A modern interpretation of the 'birthday cake' came courtesy of Calvin Klein Collection by Francisco Costa. "An interactive floating mobile cake. Small, matchbook-sized, lavender flavoured cakes covered in edible silver leaf suspended in a dégradé presentation." Australian chef Brett Redman, owner of Elliot's in Borough Market has been interpreting the design for display in Selfridges with the help of set designer Luke Abby and will feature silver leaf marshmallows.
One of the leading fashion houses to whole-heartedly embrace technology, it's no surprise that Burberry's design has a technological aspect. Entitled Burberry Lights, the design has a "light, soft lemon sponge cake with sugar icing top, illuminated with miniature studded lights and is wrapped in a metallic iconic check casing." Talented wedding cake creator Zoe Clark is working on Christopher Bailey's creation with the help of model-makers.
Dolce & Gabbana and Christian Louboutin were also invited to design cakes for the 10-year anniversary celebration. Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana said they were inspired by "memories of embroideries from a Sicilian hope chest and the Sicilian baroque". Their heart-shaped design has a sponge base "imbued in a light and sweet-smelling citron juice, Sicilian orange blossom custard, wild strawberries, blueberries and small passion fruits." Shoe designer Christian Louboutin submitted a design with his trademark red sole the focus point featuring ingredients such as chestnut cream, chocolate, vanilla extract, marzipan and shaved chocolate.
