There are far more uses to the humble utensil than one might think – as this imaginative New York-based artist affirms
Ahmet Civelek’s multidisciplinary practice makes a strong case for finding inspiration in unusual places. He first began considering the humble spoon as a potential artist’s object at the end of a road trip through middle America last winter. “We started in Bentonville, AK, at Crystal Bridges Museum and ended up in Los Angeles, with LACMA and all the galleries. On one of the final days of our trip we visited the Huntington Library in San Marino to see Alex Israel’s exhibition at the Huntington,” he explains. “While walking through the galleries there were multiple display cases showing Arabella Huntington’s silver collection. One display case in particular just held spoons. The curious display jumpstarted a fascination with the spoon as a tool, shape and anchor to the next series of works.”
Taking inspiration from Marcel Duchamp’s preoccupation with the readymade, Civelek set about creating canvases from these everyday objects in pleasingly bright shades, juxtaposing their bright artificiality with slates of marble. The result is equal parts fun and frivolous – ideal for cheering gloomy onlookers on a grey Monday morning.
