Day three of London fashion week brought three contrasting shows at three very different venues: Margaret Howell showed a signature clean and classic collection, at her studio show in W1. Models appeared laid back and understated in crisp white cotton shirts, wide-legged loose trousers, summery stripes and mannish penny loafers. Classic and timeless her pieces were beautifully everyday and wonderfully wearable. Over on the concrete concourse of the old Eurostar platform at Waterloo, Michael Van Der Ham S/S11 collection was vibrant and eclectic. Graceful patchwork dresses from luxurious found vintage fabrics came in bright hues of yellows, pinks, purple and blues. Figure hugging and cut at the knee they appeared sophisticated and feminine whilst tailored trousers draped elegantly, creating the perfect compliment. Ann-Sofie Back Atelje offered a totally different take for the upcoming season: inspired by the homogeneity that porn reduces the body to she created pieces solely out of black and white. Using organza and silk fabrics, along with metal clips around ankles and waists there was a strong focus on material and shape. The intimate salon presentation at Somerset House was the perfect setting for such a smart and sensual collection.
