To coincide with the launch of AnOther 13 – the magazine’s first fragrance in collaboration with perfumiers Le Labo – AnOther commissioned four artists to reinterpret the hand-blended scent in their own style.
Illustration is core to artist/ filmmaker Chris Lee’s creative process in order to communicate and build ideas. Adapting his style to fit each brief or concept, for AnOther 13 he worked subconsciously in order to dissect the perfume and began his drawings completely unplanned. Attempting to reach a “raw and honest” portrayal of the perfume, Lee hoped to create a visual connection between his pieces and the viewer. Here Lee explains the choice of medium for his abstract illustrations:
“I worked with a very thin pencil to describe the intricacy and delicate nature of the scent. I then built an unusual relationship with dark, bold brush marks to represent the handmade aspect to the perfume and to highlight a compositional beauty between the two. The forms and shapes created, I think, are in some way connected with the ingredients.”
