Six (Non-Easter) Things To Do Over the Long Weekend

With a four-day weekend ahead, here are some things to fill the hours with – from Chloë Grace Moretz’s latest film to a community lunch in East London

See: Tyler Mitchell’s first solo exhibition at Foam Amsterdam

Themes of black optimism, community and freedom form the basis of American photographer Tyler’s Mitchell’s first solo exhibition, I Can Make You Feel Good, opening in Amsterdam today, in case you’re in town. The 24-year-old image-maker, who made history as the first black photographer to shoot the cover of American Vogue (he photographed Beyoncé for the September 2018 edition) will present a selection of photographs from his career so far, from images of friends and adopted family to fashion editorial, and two new video installations. “I feel like the exhibition is a catharsis; getting out, processing, and making physical all of the things that I’ve been speaking about,” he told Ashleigh Kane on AnOther yesterday. “Not only in terms of my identity and black masculinity, but also what I’ve been trying to say about black people with all my references and lineage to other photographers.”

Watch: Pyschological-thriller Greta, out Friday

Former AnOther cover star Chloë Grace Moretz stars alongside Isabelle Huppert in Greta, a Neil Jordan-directed thriller which explores the loneliness of living in New York. Having recently lost her mother, Frances [Moretz] is new to the city, working in a dead-end job as a restaurant server when she follows the trail of a lost handbag to widowed piano teacher Greta [Huppert] and her extravagant Brooklyn home. A sinister – and grisly – trail of events follow, as Frances discovers Greta is not who she seems, for a film that ramps up the suspense all the way to the very last shot. Out on Friday, Greta is the perfect antidote to more saccharine Easter weekend activities.

See: Post-war Italy through the lens of Alessandro Michele-approved photographer Paolo Di Paolo

new exhibition in Rome promises a previously unseen look at the hopes and contradictions of post-war Italy of the 1950s and 60s through the lens of photographer Paolo Di Paolo. Sponsored by Gucci (Alessandro Michele found a book of Di Paolo’s work in a museum gift store), it centres around the discovery of an immense archive of over 250,000 negatives discovered by his daughter Silvia in their family seller, many of which were deemed inappropriate for publication at Il Monde at the time they were taken (Di Paolo was a photographer for the weekly magazine). The 250 works in the exhibition – on display for the first time – highlight Italy’s divide, taking the viewer from the poor agricultural communities of the country’s south to the glittering high society of Rome’s cinematic golden age.

Shop: Explore Celine’s new London store

Here’s something for the Slimaniacs: this week, Celine threw open the doors to its beautiful new store on New Bond Street, which is devoted entirely to the house’s men’s collections. A temple of refined 21st-century Brutalist design, the store is crafted from different kinds of sumptuous stone (ginger and cream-veined black granite, Bianco Raffaello marble, grande antique marble and grey travertine). Designed by Hedi Slimane himself and featuring his debut collection for Celine, the shop spans three floors – casual wear on the first, tailoring in the basement, and everything in between on street level – and is full of clothes and accessories to lust over. Well worth a window-shop or an actual shop-shop.

Donate: Golden Years’ Easter lunch helps London’s older generation

At Hackney’s Our/London distillery, Golden Years is hosting a community Easter lunch this weekend. The organisation has previously hosted lunches at Christmas for older people who might otherwise be alone on the occasion and now has turned its attention to the celebration of Easter, inviting people to enjoy a roast, bingo and a quiz hosted by Princess Julia, bonnet making with Nahir Mazhar and live music on Easter Sunday. Bingo and quiz prizes have already been donated from the likes of Ashley Williams and Claire Barrow, and donations in the form of food, flowers, eggs, prizes and care products are also welcome – contact Chris Murdoch at the address on the flyer above to find out more.

Drink: A cocktail at the London Edition’s Punch Room

A new cocktail menu has arrived at the Punch Room, the snug bar at the London Edition. The menu is inspired by the five elements, Earth, Water, Fire, Air and Aether, with five singular drinks having been concocted for each each. Play it (relatively) safe by ordering a ‘tropic like it’s hot’ – where flavours of lime and coconut punctuated by gin and pineapple ketchup – from the Water section, or go for something from the more “elusive and spiritual” Aether section. Expect them to look as exciting as they taste.
