Ellen von Unwerth: Do Not Disturb at Michael Hoppen Gallery – until August 30
Renowned fashion photographer Ellen von Unwerth presents her exclusive new body of work Do No Disturb this month in London. Shot against a backdrop of The Madonna Inn, LA, von Unwerth’s latest series features highly stylised and richly coloured images of women provocatively draped over ornate interiors, alluding to wild weekends away and seductive fantasies.
18th Biennale of Sydney – until September 16
Bringing together over 100 artists from 44 countries, the 18th Biennale of Sydney showcases unique and contemporary artwork from around the world. Themed around the idea of “all our relations” – exploring the ways that people and the world are related and the ways that we interrelate – highlights from the art extravaganza include coloured artificial fog in Ann Veronica Janssens’ “Blue, Red and Yellow” and a massive sprawling installation rendered in polystyrene by Peter Robinson, called “Gravitas Lite”, which questions modern consumer culture.
London Literature Festival at Southbank Centre – until July 12
Southbank’s sixth annual London Literature Festival presents a world-class array of spoken word performances, exciting new collaborations, workshops and talks from major writers and thinkers from around the world. This year’s leading names include Mark Haddon, John Pilger, Stella Duffy, Siri Hustvedt, Noo Saro-Wiwa, John Banville, Will Self and captivating children’s authors Michael Morpurgo and Andy Stanton.
Rita's, Dalston – from July 12
Rita's, the latest culinary venture from Jackson Boxer (the man behind the Brunswick House Cafe), will open later this month. Boasting an array of delights from fried chicken and fish tacos to patty melts, the restaurant is situated above Birthdays bar in Dalston.
Macy’s Fourth of July Fireworks – July 4, from 9pm
Celebrating United States’ Independence Day, commonly known as the Fourth of July, Macy’s will be hosting its 35th annual fireworks display in New York. Released from four barges in the Hudson River, the famous American department store will explode more than 40,000 fireworks choreographed to a 25-minute patriotic score. The largest fireworks display in the USA, this spectacle is not to be missed.
Claire De Rouen Books: Chance Claire curated by AnOther Magazine – from July 5
On July 5th independent fashion and photography bookshop Claire de Rouen will launch its new series Chance Claire with a specially curated reading list selected by AnOther Magazine. Chosen exclusively by the AnOther team, the reading list reflects our tastes, aesthetics and inspirations, and includes publications by many of the creatives with have collaborated with over the years.
The Diary of a Nose by Jean-Claude Ellena published by Penguin – July 5
The French bestseller The Diary of a Nose tells the story behind the creation of perfume by Jean-Claude Ellena, Hermès’ first “parfumeur exclusif” (“le nez” or “the nose”). Revealing the secrets behind capturing what is most elusive, Ellena gives readers a rare insight into his business, art and life as one of the world’s most important and revered perfumers.
Port Eliot Festival – July 19-22
The arts and literary festival on the beautiful Port Eliot Estate returns this year with an exciting new line-up, featuring AnOther collaborators Geoff Dyer – one of the prestigious guest speakers – and David Sims, who will be setting up a portrait studio in a corner of the walled garden. Other highlights include Port Eliot Flower Show, curated by Ballet Rambert production designer Michael Howells, and the Idler Academy lectures, organised by the cult magazine’s editor Tom Hodgkinson.
Opening Ceremony Pop-Up Store in Covent Garden – from July 19
In celebration of the Olympics from which they took their name, hip Manhattan-based retailer Opening Ceremony will be arriving in Covent Garden just in time for London’s 2012 Summer Games. The launch of their 3000 sq/ft pop-up shop situated on King Street, will also coincide with a collection of unique pieces from Proenza Schouler, Chloë Sevigny for Opening Ceremony, Delfina Delettrez and Christopher Shannon, among others, as well as a sportswear-inspired line with high street leaders Topshop, which will move into Topshop stores shortly afterwards. Their newest collaboration, Adidas x Opening Ceremony, will also launch at the same time as the pop-up store.
