Highlights in October include the photography of Carinthia West, the release of a much anticipated documentary about Diana Vreeland and an auction of iconic photographs at Christie's...
Hanging Out by Carinthia West at The Library Space – until October 5
Don't miss the chance to see the first London solo exhibition from Carinthia West, now in its final days. With casual, candid photographs of 70s icons such as Anjelica Huston, Carly Simon and George Harrison, it presents an enthralling cross-section of friendship, loyalty and fame captured throughout the decade.
Travellers' Children by Colin O'Brien – October 1-31
In 1987 photographer Colin O'Brien spent three weeks photographing a group of Irish traveller children that he came across while shooting a deserted warehouse in London Fields. The ensuing series of photographs is beautifully rendered – brimming with personality and an unexpected style and grace – and can be seen this month at The Genesis Cinema, Stepney.
The Art Cellar, Holborn – October 3-5
Located in an old wine cellar beneath the Holborn viaduct, the Art Cellar is an affordable arts fair with a broader cultural spin. Showcasing chefs, mixologists and musicians, alongside various artworks from an international array of artists, it will feature two pop-up restaurants and an experimental cocktail bar, as well as music from Errol Linton’s blues band.
Thomas Dozol: I Like You Better With Static Noise – October 5-27
Thomas Dozol's latest exhibition, at the Jack Hanley Gallery, New York, is a series of silkscreen prints inspired by Byzantine iconography and flat, depthless backgrounds. Dozol uses the silkscreen technique to striking effect, editing and layering images of the nude human form, depersonalising it to create "a visual expression of the fragmentation of our identities and the disincarnation of our desires in our ever more digitalised lives".
The Dark Cube at Palais de Tokyo, Paris – October 6-15
Taking inspiration from the 1960s Black Light posters – initially designed as visual representations of, or aids to, hallucinogenic drugs – The Dark Cube gallery presents an exhibition of paintings, photographs, prints and sculptures illuminated solely by UV lights. The result is a mesmerising fluorescence of colours, inks and materials. Turning traditional viewing and lighting on its head, the group show is a commentary on illumination and darkness, veiling and unveiling, as well as notions of failed rebellion.
Diana Vreeland: The Eye Has to Travel – October 29
Directed by Vreeland's granddaughter, Lisa Immordino Vreeland, this acclaimed documentary pays perfect homage to the celebrated editor. Featuring a number of interviews from the likes of David Bailey, Lauren Hutton and Ali McGraw, each recounting personal memories of time spent with Vreeland, it paints a vivid and intimate portrait of one of fashion's most influential visionaries.
