The AnOther team compile their top 10 things to see and do this June
1. Helmut Newton/ Alice Springs: Us and Them and Helmut Newton: Sex and Landscapes – June 5-16
To celebrate its tenth anniversary, the Helmut Newton Foundation is showing the same two exhibitions with which it opened their doors. Us and Them is a joint exhibition of photographs by Newton and his wife June (aka Alice Springs), documenting their lives together with intimate, reciprocal portraits. Sex and Landscapes is a solo exhibition by Newton which brings together an array of large format landscapes and nude portraits that the great photographer took between 1974 and 2001.
2. Sophie Calle's Rachel/Monique at the Church of the Heavenly Rest, New York – Until June 25
In this touching and personal exhibition, Sophie Calle is displaying work that she was inspired to create following the death of her mother Monique in 2006. According to Calle, her mother “liked to be the object of discussion” and the fact that she “did not appear in any of [Calle's] work annoyed her”. In tribute, Calle decided to make a body of work dedicated entirely to her. Among the works on display will be Couldn't Capture Death, Calle's 2007 film of Monique's death and the exhibition will be accompanied by a soundtrack of excerpts taken from Monique's diaries.
