At the dawn of the New Year, drydockshop pays homage to the most transformative room in the house
The loo, lavatory, restroom, washroom, sauna, shower, water closet, steam room, powder room, toilet, head – no matter its reference, the bathroom serves a vital function. The bathroom is the part of the house where you add and subtract! When using this room you're either stripping away, cleansing, shaving, exfoliating, expunging, voiding – or you're adding, moisturising, spraying, applying. Nearly every visit to this room and you either leave a little part of your body behind or walk away with the newest addition.
Too often the bathroom is completely devoid of personality and life. A cold and sterile environment replete with stock fixtures barely capable of fulfilling their intended duty. But any room that serves such a transformative purpose ought to be exciting. This week we honour 10 of the most intriguing and unique bathrooms from the past. The designers of these rooms understood the importance of an engaging bathroom space – and hats off to them.
