At this dismal time of year, sparkle is essential – a statement that the runways of A/W17 proved with aplomb. The addition of a sequin, diamanté embellishment or crystal accessory can inject a ray of light into your wardrobe, when such rays are in short supply.
It is also vital to approach this dazzling trend with a sense of the avant-garde. Sure, gung-ho Vegas showgirl glamour is a sartorial joy, but wearing sparkle with an edge proves far more arresting. Here, Agata Belcen and Nell Kalonji show us how its done in a series of images taken by Jackie Nickerson for AnOther Magazine’s latest issue.
1. Disorientating
Alessandro Michele upended our understanding of glitter by creating this head-to-toe mesh bodysuit. A bit space-age, a bit S&M, it sums up the disorientating universe of today’s Gucci.
2. Socks
Subvert the traditional diamanté-studded heel by pairing with jewel-embroidered socks. The thicker and more schoolgirl-like the better.
3. Architectural
This angular Repossi earring is the perfect architectural antidote to a face splattered with fairydust.
4. Sharp
Saint Laurent offers a sequin dress that’s more Murder on the Dancefloor than Strictly Come Dancing – a natural winner.
5. Headdress
Match your halter-neck with your headdress à la Moschino – in gobstopper-sized gems only – to really make an entrance at your office Christmas party.
6. Glitterball
Knee-high boots studded with thousands of crystals transform your calves into glitterballs worthy of Studio 54.
7. Ice Skater
Whoever thought dressing like an olympic ice skater could be so chic?
8. Flapper
Vintage silhouttes of the 1920s – fringed tiara and all – can only feel this modern when created by Mrs Prada.
10. Blanket
Keep warm by wrapping yourself in a iridescent blanket embossed with Chanel’s signature quilting.
