This Spring/Summer 2018, the New York-based designer is breathing new life into nighttime glitz and glamour, writes Alexander Fury
Tom Ford gets away with a lot of stuff: schlepping his show to Los Angeles; creating advertising campaigns comprising perfume flaçons framed by glowing glutes and heaving bosoms, or models shaving designer brand logos into their pubic hair; even calling a perfume Fucking Fabulous. The latter hung thick in the air at his Spring/Summer 2018 fashion show (back on the beaten track in New York’s Park Avenue Armoury). Ford’s focus was a modern, streamlined take on his greatest hits currently doing the rounds on other designers’ reference boards. “I didn’t want to recreate a look I had done in the 1990s, or a specific piece of clothing,” Ford said backstage. “But I was trying to capture that energy again.” Energy and glamour – Ford’s collection was a luxe trip from head to toecap. Indeed, even the pointed vamps of the vampy high-heeled stilettos sported by every model – evening-gowned and yoga-panted alike – were dipped in crystal, underscoring the glitz blitz of the rest of his seductive show. In fact, they kind of summed up the ethos: “Day clothes for women have almost evaporated,” reasoned Ford. “They’re in their trainers, dropping their kids off at school. But at night, in our culture, is the one time that people still dress.” It feels like it’s night-time all day, every day, for Ford. And how fucking fabulous is that?
