There are few things guaranteed to catch the eye like the glint of silver and gold, both found in plentiful supply in the season’s collections where a high-shine palette, in various permutations, punctuated S/S18. And, whether harking back to the heady haze of disco, or forwards towards a steely, streamlined future, designers imagined the hues afresh – rendering them in metallic leather, crystal or shards of broken mirror.
Here, as explored by Chloe Grace Press and photographed by Chris Rhodes, a gathering of the season’s most eye-catching pieces in iterations of silver or gold, from the diaphanous stamped chainmail of Paco Rabanne to Balenciaga’s thigh-high glitter boots – or fringed cocktail bags from Hillier Bartley, described by designer Katie Hillier as both an ode to Leigh Bowery’s subversive glamour, and to the sparkle of a cabaret curtain.
“I use mirrored mosaics to create clothing that references the mirrors that women constantly encounter until, like Alice, they overcome their fears and pass through them” – Maria Grazia Chiuri, Dior
“The fringe lantern could be part of a Leigh Bowery costume or a cabaret curtain... we like to put our cash and fags in it!” – Katie Hillier, Hillier Bartley
