Everything We Want to Buy this Month

Helmut Lang x Parley for the Oceans

An eight-point guide to post-New Year shopping

What with the January blues and this confusing period between the Christmas break and your normal routine, the beginning of the year is an ideal time for some retail therapy. Here, we share an eight-point guide to what we want to buy this month – from a newly released eyewear collection from Balenciaga, to Raf Simons’ (sadly) final collection for Calvin Klein.

1. The latest collaboration between NikeLab and Dover Street Market comes courtesy of the 30th anniversary of Nike’s legendary Just Do It campaign. Among the colourful offering of T-shirts and hoodies, this classic white tee is perfect for new year’s fitness resolutions (or, alternatively, lounging on your sofa).

2. Marni’s fascination for the arts has been a recurring motif since Francesco Risso became creative director in 2016. For S/S19, Risso collaborated with German photographer Florian Hetz and American figurative painter Betsy Podlach to reflect on the human body’s natural harmony, elegance and imperfection – this PVC printed bag is a perfect, and covetable, example.

3. A new month – and a new year – is a chance to revitalise your skincare routine. Rich in antioxidants and made of extracts of petals and essential oils from the Rose De Mai, Chantecaille’s pure rosewater is an easy solution for instantly reinvigorated skin.

4. Helmut Lang has collaborated with environmentally minded collective Parley on a selection of unisex jackets which will make your wardrobe more sustainable this month. Developed by Parley for the Oceans in upcycled marine plastic waste, the black hooded raincoat is a practical solution for January’s rainy days.

5. Inspired by objects, documents and photographs she inherited from her grandfather, Felicia Honkasalo’s Grey Cobalt is a visual diary of her native Finland. Published by Loose Joints, the body of work juxtaposes the photographer’s personal history to the country’s collective narratives through photographs of artefacts and landscapes, serving travel inspiration (and some much-needed escapism).

6. The Row’s Tea Time leather boots are perfect for post-festive season hibernation. The narrow, block heel makes for easy comfort, while burgundy leather nods to winter hues – well-suited to complement your New Year’s corporate uniform.

7. Following Raf Simons’ departure from Calvin Klein just before Christmas, it’s safe to say his designs for the American mega-brand will become some of the most coveted pieces to purchase this season. We’ll be investing in a statement piece from the brand’s 205W39NYC line – we currently have our eyes on this Andy Warhol-print wool jumper.

8. Marking the brand’s first collection with Kering Eyewear, Balenciaga Eyewear’s S/S19 offering should be snapped up immediately. Launched exclusively at Dover Street Market’s futuristic pop-ups in Tokyo, Los Angeles, New York City, London, Singapore, and Beijing, the collection includes cat-eye, aviator and round styles in bright colourways – this cat-eye frame in super thin metal is our favourite.
