Easy-to-use and multipurpose, the Sisley Black Rose Cream Mask is an all-round people-pleaser

From the niche new beauty brands doing something different, to the industry’s evergreen icons, Sophie Bew opens up AnOther’s dream vanity in a new series...

  1. Who should use it? 100% everyone, everywhere. Provided you like the smell of roses – and if you don’t, what on earth do you like?
  2. How long until I love it? 15 minutes max.
  3. How planet-friendly is it? Short answer please! The bottle is plastic but Sisley fund a wide-range if sustainability initiatives and research.
  4. How do I use it? Squeeze a 20p-sized dollop into your palm and lavish your face chest with it; wipe-off excess after 15 minutes, or leave on to sleep/on the plane, as you see fit.

There are many under-the-radar beauty products, which are loved by all in-the-know but rarely discussed – Sisley Black Rose Cream Mask is one of them. [n.b. Sisley’s lavender scented SPF body milk is another but that’s a story for another day.] I’ve never worked with an editor who doesn’t keep a tube of it with them wherever they go. Obviously I’ve obediently followed suit like a dutiful beauty slave – but with good reason.

Rich in active anti-aging ingredients (black rose, padina pavonica, and alkekengi calyx extracts) and of course rose oil, a natural anti-inflammatory that reduces redness and irritation, it’s a multipurpose moisturising mask, while its rosy scent is endlessly pleasing. AnOther Magazine’s editor-in-chief Susannah Frankel swears by it. “It is the best moisturiser I have ever used,” she raves. “I love that it’s a mask but more than not is completely absorbed. It smells like heaven and rose is cooling. I’m generally low maintenance, and don’t like make-up or complicated beauty regimes but I am honestly never without it.”

Instructions are simple but pleasingly customisable: apply a thick layer to cleansed, toned skin (not in the shower, as this picture might suggest). Tissue off any excess after a quarter of an hour but the longer you leave it on, the better. If you’re anything like me, there’d be no excess for said tissue within 30 minutes. Usage in the morning will provide a plump, dewy start to the day (a pea-sized amount also makes for a great make-up primer). Used at night instead of your cream, or as well as if you’re feeling extra, and simply left to sink in will reveal happy, glowy skin come morning. Like-wise for an easy in-flight facial. It’s extremely low-fuss: minimal effort, maximal results. As with all skincare, a trial and error approach will reap great rewards.
