Should I go Suzy Parker auburn? Or rather should I give Suzy Parker auburn another whirl? I muse on this idea while Christophe Robin – Paris’ hair colour guru – reveals next season’s trends. I am sitting in his Meurice Hotel salon, attending a launch of his ‘rose extract’ hair products: aimed to fluff up fine hair. Since it’s Christophe, the presentation turns into an Inner Chic knees-up; further charged by Ladurée’s best macaroons.

His clients may include Catherine Deneuve, Juliette Binoche and so forth but he remains gloriously grounded. “Je suis normal,” Christophe often says when he’s really a prince in pretty cool clothing. Being one of L’Oréal’s roving ambassadors – in a week, Christophe cuts a veritable swathe through Rio, Dubai and Madrid – he also knows the latest in hair care buzz. So, after dabbing our paws with cream and perking up our scalps with spray, the session quickly spirals into a list of Christophe’s summer holiday tips. “Give your hair a needed break by not blow drying it,” he starts. “Unless you have the volume, avoid those Brazilian hair straightening treatments,” he urges. “If blond, try using the lemon slices from your vodka and tonic,” he says. “They give a lovely highlight.”

With regard to winter’s hot new hair colours, it’s either a major return to red – Julianne Moore, count on being copied – or Lady Gaga-type outrageous. I begin to reminisce about my flame-haired period then stop. After swimming in the sun, my curls turned a harsh, unflattering orange. Still, ever the expert, Christophe’s list sets me straight. “Don’t change your colour just before the holidays,” he advises. “And always protect your hair: continuously rinse and moisturise, particularly after the pool and the sea.” So here’s to lashings of Christophe’s lavender-based oil.
