See Jil Sander’s Positive, Radiant New Collection

Jil Sander Spring/Summer 2021

Lucie and Luke Meier’s new collection for the Milan-based house proposes positivity and elegance in uncertain times

Lucie and Luke Meier, the wife-and-husband design duo at the helm of Jil Sander, have revealed their Spring/Summer 2021 collection for the Milan-based fashion house. Presented via a film by Stephen Kidd, the Jil Sander Spring/Summer 2021 collection is about ease and elegance, with close attention paid to craftsmanship, tailoring and timelessness. During uncertain times – and in the midst of a fashion month like no other, full of alternatives to the traditional runway show – the Meiers’ latest collection proposes positivity and elegance.

The film – which features music by Kelsey Lu – sees models walk in what might ordinarily have been a runway show, staged instead without an audience in a vast, concrete-floored space. Since their debut at Jil Sander, Lucie and Luke Meier have honed a structured, sensual purity in their collections, and this “extremely feminine” offering is no different. With considered silhouettes, a pared-back colour palette and varied textures – think buttery leather, sturdy wool, and metal hardware – Jil Sander S/S21 balances different elements. Airy silks are countered with thick-soled leather boots and shoes, earthy tones with gold jewellery, and intricate black crochet pieces with streamlined cream dresses.

Certain pieces were crafted by hand, with crochet, pleats, smocking and embroidery, reflecting how the designers favour intricate workmanship in their collections. Elsewhere accessories are playful: bags are rendered in vibrant, tactile leather and striking black feathers adorn a scarf and pair of earrings.

The ethos of the collection speaks to how recent months have forced people, and the fashion industry, to slow down, and recalibrate. The Meiers propose clothing for life, rooted in beautiful craftsmanship and made to last, keep and treasure. “In today’s atmosphere questions abound, yet beauty and quality remain essential. Consciousness, appreciation, and positivity are what can help us all move forward. The collection celebrates these ideas.”
