Susannah Frankel, Editor-in-Chief

John Galliano discussing the inspirations and processes behind the making of his Maison Margiela Artisanal collection during the first lockdown. His references are so clever and the fact that he talked so directly about them is unprecedented. Apart from the final film – shot by Nick Knight – the whole thing felt very lo-fi which fits with the Maison Martin Margiela ethos. Beyond that, there was a modesty, quietness and intimacy to the experience, from the open-ness of Galliano himself to the inner workings of the team – models, hair, make-up, styling, designers – that felt like privileged access at a time when people were – and more often than not still are – necessarily separated.”

Alexander Fury, Fashion Features Director

“Miuccia Prada and Raf Simons’ first collaborative collection, and the extraordinary virtual catwalk show in that Lurpak-yellow salon. It really, for me, set a benchmark as to how wonderful fashion shows can look online. And the clothes were incredible too. They looked great online, and I can’t wait to get my hands on them.”

Katie Shillingford, Fashion Director (Women’s)

“After the months of wondering what the point of anything was anymore I completely fell back in love with fashion after listening to John Galliano talk about his process and inspiration for the Maison Margiela Artisanal collection. I watched it (for the first time) on the Eurostar on my way to Paris for a shoot and I cried (it was quite embarrassing!) I’ve always been a huge John Galliano fan but this made me happy at a very low point.”

Ellie Grace Cumming, Fashion Director (Men’s)

“Undercover’s show in January, ‘Fallen Man’, choreographed by Damien Jalet. It was an incredibly intimate and looking back feels like a prophecy of what this year was to bring, a statement of emotion, incredibly beautiful and moving performance, when fashion becomes so much more, a moment, memory and experience I will never forget.”

Sophie Bew, Editor

“I’m biased of course but it must have been the recent issue of AnOther Magazine. I was off on maternity leave and had nothing to do with its making but I was bowled over by what the team created during some precarious months. From Katy England’s Random Identities story (spliced with Charlie Gosling’s splendid paintings and Flora Starkey’s fragile floral still-lifes) to Katie Shillingford’s celebration of graduate designers, the fashion hummed with love and joy – a glorious reminder of why we’re all here doing what we do.”

Hannah Lack, Managing Editor

“Everything worn at the Saturday-night West London blues party in the ‘Lovers Rock’ installment of Steve McQueen’s luminous film anthology Small Axe.”
