Introducing New Beginnings, a new series of mini Q&As spotlighting emerging designers, in the wake of Craig McDean and Katie Shillingford’s shoot for AnOther Magazine Autumn/Winter 2020.
AnOther Magazine: What are your hopes for the future?
Giovanna Flores: That the need for progress and equality stays in the foreground.
AM: What is the thinking behind your work?
GF: Clothing is a relationship that you have with yourself and your body. It happens everyday, it’s special. I try to show that relationship in my work. To me it feels like a bit of a collage: a collage of people, feelings, and self-portraits. [This year] has been good to take time to re-evaluate patterns in both my work and personal life – to look at what makes sense to continue, and also what makes sense to get rid of.
AM: What three words would you use to describe your approach to fashion?
GF: People, feelings, and self-portraits.
AM: What does community mean to you?
GF: I am beyond grateful to have such great people around me with a huge range of personalities, opinions, and skills. We make space for each other in our lives, listen and learn from one another. I think that is community. Having, feeling, and giving support is important.
