“Learn who you are, become an emotional adult. And then be ready to put your big-person pants on,” the American designer tells Alexander Fury

“I was at Central Saint Martins recently, speaking with students, and was really shocked by the ubiquity of this one mentality – which I had, too, as a student throughout my twenties. It was this anxiousness, this eagerness, to get out there to become everything you’ve ever dreamed of. Everyone is horny for the pay-off – the acclaim. And fashion is full of losers, who were losers in high school and who are desperate to be loved and affirmed and praised. Once you get that, it’s over so quickly – and the actual work of building a career that lasts begins. I just want to shake my younger self and shake all these students and say, ‘Why would you want to start at 23?’ Learn who you are, become an emotional adult. And then be ready to put your big-person pants on. Patience is chic.”

Texas-born, 36-year-old Daniel Roseberry describes himself as an impatient person, yet he diligently worked behind the scenes for more than a decade as head of men’s and women’s collections for the American designer Thom Browne before emerging to take a centre-stage role at the helm of Parisian couture house Schiaparelli. Appointed in April 2019, Roseberry presented two shows before Covid-19 hit, which in turn gave him time to “gain perspective”. In less than three years, Schiaparelli’s profile has rocketed to include outfits for Beyoncé and Adele, as well as the look worn by Lady Gaga for Joe Biden’s 2021 inauguration – a washed silk faille skirt and fitted cashmere jacket with a frying-pan-sized dove of peace pinned to its chest that was secretly fitted over a bulletproof vest. Roseberry returned to physical catwalk shows in January: the theme of the collection was celestial, and his star is on the rise.
