Watch: How Gucci’s Alessandro Michele Created Björk’s Cover Look

The Making of a Gucci Gown for Björk (film still)Directed by Tommaso Arnaldi

In a new behind-the-scenes video, Gucci brings us inside their ateliers to see the construction of Björk’s look for the cover of AnOther Magazine Autumn/Winter 2022

Björk is synonymous with style. Arguably Iceland’s most famous export, across her 45-year-long career Björk has reinvented herself – with each album and magazine cover, music video and performance a signifier for a new era.

For the musician’s new music video, titled Ovule, Gucci creative director Alessandro Michele designed two intricate custom pieces – one of which appears on the cover of AnOther Magazine’s latest Autumn/Winter 2022 issue. Unveiled earlier today and lensed by Nick Knight, the cover continues Björk’s creative dialogue with the Italian fashion house, following Alessandro Michele’s collaboration on the music video The Gate in 2017.

To celebrate the meeting of these creative minds, one of the custom-made looks from the music video is featured in a new ‘making of’ video, revealed last week by Gucci, taking us behind the scenes at the Italian atelier and offering a unique glimpse into the construction of a masterpiece. Meticulous spirals of pleated organza, seen in tones of crimson and burgundy, are carefully offset by cascading sequin fringe. Underneath, a crimson latex bodysuit hugs the figure. The volumes of crystalline edging and sequins frame the face, and ease downward into a train, “as a flower that blooms upside down revealing its petals”.

The video captures the dexterous hands of the fashion house’s artisans, executing a vision seen by Michele to build a look that is equally as riotous and extravagant as the music featured in Björk’s video for Ovule. Directed by Tommaso Arnaldi, the behind-the-scenes film casts a light on the dedication and care behind each and every Gucci look made in the atelier.
