This year’s Met Gala paid homage to the late Karl Lagerfeld, with guests modelling themselves in his iconic image and wearing his vintage designs
Yesterday, on the first Monday of May, guests descended upon the steps of the Met in New York City for the Met Gala 2023. This year’s exhibition, Karl Lagerfeld: The Line of Beauty at the Costume Institute, celebrates the late designer’s work while using a theoretical framework inspired by the British artist William Hogarth’s 1753 book The Analysis of Beauty. Lagerfeld, who passed away in 2019 at the age of 85, had an insurmountable impact on fashion while working under his own eponymous label and for various others, including Chanel, Fendi and Chloé.
Lagerfeld’s personal appearance was almost as iconic as the fashion he created – white hair pulled back into a ponytail, sunglasses, black fingerless leather gloves, monochrome outfits – and many celebrity guests on the red carpet paid homage to him, opting for black-and-white ensembles, vintage Chanel, fraying tweeds, and white wigs. Doja Cat and Jared Leto even dressing up as Choupette, his beloved, cream-coloured Birman cat, while Nicole Kidman wore the pink silk tulle couture gown (replete with ostrich feathers, crystals and sequins) from her Chanel No 5 commercial, made by Baz Luhrmann almost two decades prior.
