Our cultural recommendations for the week.
This week, events are taking place to showcase worldwide talent with a distinct focus on an international audience. Dasha Zhukova’s acclaimed Garage Centre in Moscow presents two new exhibitions; Rankin shows in Paris; and the Birds Eye Film Festival opens in London to celebrate international women working in film.
Garage Centre for Contemporary Culture, Exhibition Opening, Moscow – Thursday, March 4
After a soft opening in late 2008 the Garage Centre in Moscow has become internationally recognised. The converted Bakhmetevsky Bus Garage has become transformed under the careful direction of its owner, POP editor Dasha Zhukova. As of Thursday two new exhibitions open: Futurologia and Russian Utopias, both exploring contemporary Russian art. With Futurologia curated by international French curator Herve Mikaeloff and Russian Utopias by two young Russian curators, Tatiano Volkova and Yulia Aksenova, the two exhibitions present both a national and international view on modern art in Russia.
Opening of Rankin Eat Me Naked at A-Galerie, Paris – Friday March 5 to Saturday April 17
A-Galerie in Paris presents a selection of works from celebrated British photographer, Rankin. The multi-talented photographer’s work spans genres and subjects – his diverse portfolio includes portraits of Tony Blair, George Clooney, Giselle, Blur, Madonna, U2, and The Queen, amongst others. Co-founder of Dazed&Confused he has also shot covers for Vogue, Harpers&Queen, Arena & GQ. Its opening night is this Thursday at the BFI with a showcase of the best new shorts by women including Juanita Wilson’s The Door (Oscar nominated) and will be followed by drinks and DJs (female, of course) in the BFI bar.
