Since launching her eponymous brand in 1970 – after finding inspiration in an old, finely stitched pinstripe shirt that she happened upon at a jumble sale – Margaret Howell changed the landscape of British fashion forever. A world away from the fickle trends of the industry, Howell’s utilitarian design philosophy instead hinged on the idea of having a personal uniform, and sticking to it: these are garments and accessories that you can rely on not just for one season, but for life. “I enjoy pulling these threads of British tradition, quality and skill together in clothes that are meant to be worn in the real world, where good design is about living with thoughtful style,” she says. “I’ve always wanted clothes to be the way I drew them – relaxed and lived in – a natural look.”
This durable design ethos runs through the brand’s latest drop of bags: a series of simple satchels and tote bags finished in luscious leather. Available in two sizes and two colours – black and brown – the pleat pocket satchel is a contemporary take on the classic school satchel, bringing back-to-school energy. The leather tote, also in black and brown, is the perfect accompaniment for the daily office commute, or more long-haul travel.
Like all of Margaret Howell’s pieces, these understated bags are designed to get better with age; over time, the leather – which is 100% vegetable-tanned – will soften and develop, adding character. Crafted in Florence by Tivoli, a leader in the region’s leather goods industry, the bags are limited-edition too, individually numbered on the back to indicate production.
