Success has been brewing for Anna Calvi for a few years now. Having supported Interpol and the Arctic Monkeys in concert, she was invited by Nick Cage to tour with his band Grinderman in late 2010. A nomination for the 2011 Mercury Music Prize soon followed, and her renown is spreading, helped by unconditional support from the likes of Brian Eno, who has called her "the biggest thing since Patti Smith." Like the legendary rock star, Calvi is known for her extraordinary performances, entwining stunning vocals with a romantic, seductive stage presence, with an sartorial elegance strongly informed by the style of the 1940s. This sleek elegance is also mirrored by the style of her Favourite Thing, a Red Vox Amp which visually calls to mind an old fashioned wireless. Here we speak to Calvi, star of AnOther's JEAN D.I.Y Project in collaboration with Rag & Bone, about her purchase of the amp, and some of the glamorous places she has taken it to.
When did you first get the Red Vox and where from? Did someone recommend it?
I got my red Vox from a shop in Denmark Street, London.
What's the best place the Red Vox has been to?
The best place it's been is probably Cannes Film Festival, when we were invited to play there.
What's your second favourite piece of musical equipment?
Other than my guitar and my amp, my favourite piece of equipment is my TRex Roommate reverb pedal.
