Kim Sion is an art director and former agent, who has represented the likes of Another Man’s Alister Mackie, Ellen Von Unwerth, Katy England, Mert and Marcus, Venetia Scott and Joe McKenna. She is also the founder of the mouthwatering blog aptly entitled A Mouthful of Kim, which she regularly updates with her favourite food finds and homemade dishes. Dividing her time between London and the Peak District, Derbyshire, Sion is also a keen traveller as reflected through her farflung blog entries. From a toasted croissant at Gusto, 97, Westbourne Park Villas, London to beer battered fish “caught that day” on Haggerstone Island, Great Barrier Reef, Australia, and blowtorched crème caramels at Rôtisserie du Beaujolais, Paris (“my favourite post”), Sion is sure to provide readers with a visual sampler – or should that be mouthful – of the cuisine she comes across. “The concept is that there is no concept,” Sion explains of her popular blog, which features polaroid snapshots alongside short annotations. “I must admit I really don’t understand why most food blogs have so much copy to read. I think a blog should be a quick hit of information. I also love taking the pictures.”
Here we catch up with Sion to learn more about why she started blogging and her favourite dishes...
What motivated you to into starting your blog A Mouthful of Kim and how long have you been running it for?
The blog has been going for about a year and a half. It started because as I have always taken food pictures and whenever I showed them to family or friends I'd get questioned on why I did so and feel like I was boring the viewer. The blog is a perfect opportunity to share the images with a hopefully appreciative audience.
How selective are you about which dishes you post?
I am quite selective. If the food is not good I won’t post it. I didn’t want to come across as a critic and I find it hard to be negative.
You often post images of dishes you make – how much of a keen cook are you?
A super keen cook. I actually never planned to put my recipes on but then I kept thinking wow that looks great why not post it . The recipes seem to be going down well and they are all super easy to make.
Who do you cook your dishes for?
Friends and family. I love cooking for people. My boyfriend is a super good critic and so appreciative, and that is part of the joy of cooking for people.
Do you have any cooking rules?
Don’t be scared and experiment. It is so rewarding when the result is good.
What is your favourite dish you have made?
That’s a hard question there are actually quite a few at the moment: I’m loving the lamb chops and spring greens and the roasted fish with peppers.
What is your favourite dish you have eaten out?
I am afraid that’s also a super hard question. I had an incredible meal at the new restaurant 34 last week, but it was so dark I couldn’t take pictures without a flash, which is impossible in a restaurant where they don’t like you using cameras.
Are there any foods that you dislike?
I won’t eat rabbit – I had too many of them as a child – and I also don’t like offal or veal.
What do you hope readers get from your blog?
A little bit of inspiration.
Is your blog just a sideline project or do you have any future plans for it?
It’s a hobby which I thought I would tire of, but now I get so many hits I feel I can’t let my audience down. I would love to do the A Mouthful of Kim Cookbook, so that’s my dream for 2012.
