There has been a longstanding appreciation for all things floral on AnOther Loves. This week, the Most Loved is a pair of embroidered socks from Dolce & Gabbana's memorable A/W12 collection. There were numerous detailed socks in the 73-look collection but it was this pair, with their colour flower detailing, which caught the eye of their Lover, AnOther's fashion assistant Emma Corbett.
Flowers and ornate detailing were central to Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana's latest collection, with chandeliers decorated with flowers above the runway and garments decorated with gold metallic thread, lace, cherub prints; all inspired by the baroque religious traditions of Domenico's native Sicily.
The needlepoint aspect of this accessory is particularly interesting – it's unusual to see such a detailed design on a sock, especially with as low a denier as this. The origins of embroidery are unknown, but early examples survive from ancient Egypt, Iron Age Northern Europe and Zhou Dynasty China. Examples of surviving Chinese chain stitch embroidery worked in silk thread have been dated to the 5th-3rd century BC.
Here, we speak to Corbett about the reasons behind her choice...
What made you choose to love these Dolce & Gabbana A/W12 Embroidered Socks?
They're a really nice detail which wouldn’t be the first thing one would notice in the collection.
How would you wear them?
Dressed down with trainers.
How would you describe your sock drawer?
Colourful with a rather extensive collection of slipper socks.
Do you have a favourite pair of socks?
I’m a big Happy Socks fan so I think it would have to be one of their patterned pairs.
Socks, stockings, tights or bare legs?
Socks in summer, tights in winter.
Much of the Dolce & Gabbana A/W12 collection was heavily embellished and very ornate – what's the most ornate piece you own?
I don’t think I own anything particularly ornate but I would love to own any of the African masquerade costumes photographed by Phyllis Galembo in Maske.
If you were to embroider something today what would it be?
I would really like a fully embroidered denim jacket although it would be a rather big time commitment.
Do you have a favourite Dolce & Gabbana item of all-time?
The metal corset dress from S/S07.
