The forthcoming Olympics have set the world into a quiver of sporting anticipation – a ripple that has inevitably crept into the sartorial consciousness. And on the menswear catwalks of Milan, the sporting spirit was making itself felt across the board. On Sunday, Armani debuted the competition swimming costumes for the Italian Olympic team, Versace rocked out with ornately studded boxing belts and Trussardi showcased spectator chic, with hats and sunglasses ideal for watching qualifying heats in the athletics arena. Yet amid overt sporting references, elaborate detailing, acid brights, Prada was the eye of the storm, with Miuccia sending out a collection that was a masterclass in minimalism.

In stark contrast to A/W12, a richly detailed affair which featured the likes of Gary Oldman and Willem Dafoe striding out of inky blackness along a luxuriously ornate carpet, sporting frock coats and cravats, Prada for summer is lavish only in its restraint. Formed in strict but fluid lines, embellishments were limited to contrasting collars and hems, with vibrant jewel shades the only concession to excess. Yet even at Prada, the sporting touch was present. Girls mingled with the boys, their outfits differentiated through their tennis style sweatbands, and the Rem Koolhaas designed backdrop could have doubled as a skateboarder’s ramp. This nod to skater chic is entirely timely, with June 21 marking Go Skateboarding Day. Essentially, it is very clear that, according to Milan at least, long after the hype of the Olympics has faded menswear will be still be styling to the beat of the sportswear drum.
