These days, the accolade “fashion icon” is bandied around a lot: when once it applied only to Hollywood royalty, such as Audrey Hepburn and Grace Kelly, now a L.A. starlet can be thus acclaimed on the basis of a single outré sartorial selection. So when does a figure pass from being merely “well dressed”, to be judged fit to enter the pantheon of fashion legends? In this week’s Most Loved post, the benchmark has been set – when someone has been recreated as a My Little Pony, they are surely set for fashion immortality.
In the week that Karl Lagerfeld came to London to launch his Olympic collection, drawing frenzied crowds outside Selfridges, he also reigned supreme on the AnOther Loves stream. My Little Karl Lagerfeld, as selected by Sally Anne Loxley, is a faithful reimagining of the Chanel designer’s trademark outfit: complete with huge black sunglasses, a crisp collared shirt, an impeccably tailored suit and icicle-white, slicked back hair. While it is far more usual to find toy reincarnations of superheroes and movie stars, it is a trend that is slowly growing within the fashion world. Last year, artist Andrew Yang created doll versions of US Vogue editors Anna Wintour and Grace Coddington, and cartoonist Craig Redman dressed his cult figure Darcel as 150 different fashion personalities in a collaboration with Parisian boutique Colette.
Here we speak to Loxley about her love for Karl, her childhood playthings, and, of course, the ubiquitous question – what is set to be her highlight of the Olympics...
Why did you choose to Love this Karl Lagerfeld My Little Pony?
The incongruity of it, it made me laugh. I think the likeness is remarkable.
If you could create your own My Little Pony, what would it look like?
An all white Maison Martin Margiela My Little Pony would be great, (like a My Little Pony version of the Margiela Albino Minnie Mouse posted by Laura Bradley) with Tabi boots on its hooves.
What toys did you play with when you were younger?
I used to play with dolls a lot when I was really young. I spent hours dressing them up in different outfits and plaiting their hair. I gave them different names with every outfit.
Based on this Love, would riding be your sport of choice in the Olympics. If not, what would you choose, and why?
No, gymnastics is my favourite. It never fails to amaze me what gymnasts can do with their bodies. I love watching all of it, floor, beam, whatever.
What part of Karl's iconic look do you most admire/wish to emulate?
His hair, it's excellent.
What was your last purchase?
I recently went to India and bought two beautiful rugs for my flat.
