To mark Hermès' collection of digital-inspired silk ties, AnOther invited graphic designer Matthew Lucas to create a series of celebratory GIFs...
Computer technology has long been a interesting reference point for fashion. From the Prada Robot to Karl Lagerfeld's obsession with iPods resulting in the appearance of chic Chanel holders. For his men's S/S08 collection, Raf Simons reacted to the "www-generation" by encouraging his audience to "forget about MySpace, and find your space in the material world".
"The 8 Ties collection's strength lies in its clever balance of technology and craftsmanship"
Hermès however is not a brand that brings to mind digital technology. It is a house steeped in history and proudly acknowledges its skilled artisans. It is exciting then that this winter season sees the release of a brilliant collection of digital-inspired silk ties. The eight designs embody the characteristic elements of numeric culture, such as the USB symbol, the On/Off symbol and the cable jack. The collection's strength lies in its clever balance of technology and craftsmanship. Whilst using technology to inspire the prints, the heavy twill ties are made from fine silk and feature the Hermès label within the design, rather than a stitched label. Hermes ties were first introduced in 1949 and are made from the same high-quality silk as the house's iconic scarves.
To celebrate the collection, AnOther invited graphic designer Matthew Lucas to create GIFs based on five of the ties, exclusively for AnOther.
The Hermès 8 Ties collection is available exclusively at Selfridges alongside a digital installation by artist Miguel Chevalier, until December 2.
