From Dumbo and Babar to playing key roles in both Indiana Jones and Bond’s tropical escapes, elephants always add charm to every situation into which they are invited, and none more so than our latest Loves vote winner – a minimalist elephant slide on a beach in Girona, Spain, laden with avid children, chosen by Present & Correct.
Everyone loves elephants – they are surely one of nature’s most irresistible creations, as well as one of its most mysterious. Prehistoric in build, with their cement grey folds of skin, the serpentine trunk and legs like pillars; they have an air of having been around since the dawn of time, that they’ve seen it all. They are a remnant of a past age, a craggy constant perambulating slowly on the fringes of a world in the throes of eternal change. And yet for all this mystery, this week’s most loved post is a playful homage to this mighty beast, a sculptural slide on the Spanish coast, where children clamber aboard and career down the trunk.
"They are a remnant of a past age, a craggy constant perambulating slowly on the fringes of a world in the throes of eternal change."
Here we speak to Neal of stationary aficionados Present & Correct, who describes his dream sliding attire and recalls fond memories of a misbehaved Blue Peter guest.
Why did you choose to love this elephant slide?
I really like old playground equipment, there's something a little bit melancholy about it. Mainly though this is a slide in the shape of an elephant, on a beach. That's quite hard to beat.
Where would you keep it if you owned it?
I would leave it on the beach so everyone can go on it. It's in Girona so it would be nice and sunny.
In your opinion, what's the best sliding attire?
Having been on a slide wearing one I think definitely a lederhosen. You go really fast.
What's your steed of choice: horse, elephant, camel or donkey?
I think a donkey would be the best company.
What's your favourite elephant appearance in art/film/literature?
Lulu, the elephant that soiled the Blue Peter studio several times over.
What is the last thing you bought?
A tub of ice cream to go with the apple tart I made to take to a friends house tonight.
What are you looking forward to about May?
Going to Antwerp and making some new things.
