We celebrate the sophistication of brown exemplified in Bottega Veneta's S/S14 show
Caught somewhere between russet and black, brown is synonymous with the earth. There is a depth to brown; it has an edge that is both sombre yet defiant, associated with stability and convention.
It also fittingly acts as the primary colour for Bottega Veneta’s S/S14 collection: a display of ochre and dark tones which span out to soft greys, teal and navy, with similarly earthy make-up and hair. While silhouettes change seasonally with Bottega Veneta, their colour palette remains consistent – soft, sophisticated neutral hues, led by a signature intrecciato weave.

Creative director Tom Maier was inspired this season by The Metropolitan’s Impressionism, Fashion and Modernity exhibition. Recognised within ruffles, ruched layers and beaded embellishment, a thread of drama runs through the collection. Gathered, cinched waists and extended shoulders are softened by mohair fringing and delicate, light fabrics, reminiscent of 19th century drapery and not out of place within an Manet painting. Through the rich Bottega colour palette comes a weight of history and strength. As Impressionist poet Emele Zola said, “I am here to live out loud.”
